| History |
The Southwest Ohio High School Hockey League (SWOHSHL) was founded in the 1985-1986 season with the intention of strengthening hockey in Southern Ohio. Centerville (1972), Moeller (1982), and Upper Arlington (1977) were among the established teams. Sycamore and Talawanda were in the SWOHSHL in the 1990's. Beavercreek and Troy joined in 1997 to expand the league to seven teams. Thomas Worthington and Worthington Kilbourne were admitted to the league in 1998 and St Charles followed in 1999.
A major expansion occurred in 2002, Dublin Coffman (2002), Dublin Scioto (2002) and Gahanna Lincoln (2002) High Schools decided to field OSHAA varsity teams and depart the GCHSCHL. These three schools joined with St. Charles Preparatory, Thomas Worthington, Worthington Kilbourne, and Upper Arlington High Schools to form the North Division of the Southwest Ohio High School Hockey League (SWOHSHL).
In 2003-2004, the Columbus area schools then seceded from the SWOHSHL to form their own seven team high school conference, the Capital Hockey Conference (CHC). The six remaining teams: Beavercreek, Moeller, Sycamore, Centerville, Talawanda, Troy invited Springboro and St Xavier to join the SWOHSHL to form an eight team league.
The league took on a new appearance beginning in the 2005 - 2006 hockey season. The eight existing SWOHSHL members unanimously accepted the Alter Knights' petition to enter the league. As a result of the change, the SWOHSHL was reorganized into one 4-team and one 5-team based upon North and South geographic regions.
Changes occurred again in the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 seasons. Moeller exited the league to join the Capital Hockey Conference in 2009-2010. Springboro moved into the South Division to balance the two divisions at four teams each. In 2010-2011, The Elder High School Panthers have made the jump from a Club team to the Ohio High School Varsity level. Elder is added to the South division of the SWOHSHL. |
