The Championship game of the 13th Annual Frozen Creek Tournament pitted the Beavercreek Beavers against the Centerville Elks in the Ice Box at the Kettering Recreation Complex on Sunday, November 29 at 12:40 PM. The Beavercreek Beavers were victorious over the Centerville Elks in the Championship Game of the 13th Annual Frozen Creek Hockey Tournament. The Championship marks the 2nd time in the 13 year history that the Beavers have one their own tournament, the first time being in 2005. The final game was a hard fought battle with Centerville that was scoreless through the first two periods. The Elks drew first blood just over six minutes into the 3rd period when Joe Breslin sniped a long shot from inside the left face-off circle. The shot ricocheted off the cross-bar into the net for the unassisted goal. Three minutes later Beavercreek Captain Matt Green put the team on his shoulders to answer back with a laser shot of his own from inside the right face-off circle. The unassisted power play goal knotted the game at 1-1 with just over five minutes to go. The Elks held off a second consecutive Beaver power play in the final five minutes of play. The three-man shoot-out had the visiting Beavers going first. Pavi Kullar beat the Elk netminder on the glove side to put Creek up 1-0. Creek goalie Kyle McClure stopped the 1st Elk shooter, Joe Boucher, with a pad save. The Elk netminder returned the favor as he turned aside Matt Green's attempt. McClure continued to shine in net as he spread the leg pads across the goal mouth to stone Joe Breslin. Mike Mazza sealed the Creek Championship when he drove the puck through Elk netminder Korchinski. Both goaltender's played a fantastic game with McClure earning the win making 24/25 saves for 96.0 save percentage. Overall, the Beavers played disciplined team hockey as they were whistled for only one penalty. Coach McClure sent the whole team to pick-up the tournament trophy to amplify the fact that this was a team win. Beavercreek's trip to the finals started with an early Friday morning 2-1 victory over Troy. Creek followed up with a 3-1 win over Maumee in a Friday late afternoon game. On Saturday, the Beavers earned the trip to the finals with a 5-3 victory over North Canton Hoover. Green's 8 points on 3 goals and 5 assists and Mazza's 5 goals led the Beavers to victory. Kullar had 4 points on 2 goals and 2 assists and Kyle Stout chipped in with three assists. Senior Kyle Cochran notched his first varsity goal that gave the Beavers a two goal lead late in the 3rd period over Hoover. Senior Goaltender Kyle McClure was stellar in net during the tournament with a 4-0 record and made 94 out of 100 saves for a 94.0 save percentage. The 4-0 start marks the best ever for a new coach as Head Coach Kevin McClure tasted the sweetness of victory with first year assistants Mike Ivcic and Ray Morandi. |
