The Beavercreek Beavers faced off with the top-seeded Talawanda Braves in the Quarterfinal Round of the District Tourney at the Dispatch Ice Haus on Saturday morning, February 28. Top Seeded Talawanda won the opening face-off and penetrated into the Creek zone for the first shot on goal, but Creek netminder McClure made the save and covered the puck. The Braves would get another shot on goal before a roughing penalty put the Beavers on the power play at 1:40 into the game. Creek was able to penetrate the Talawanda zone early in the man-advantage and get some puck movement before the Braves recovered and cleared. Creek moved the puck back into the Talawanda zone and moved the puck well to open up for a couple of shots on goal. The puck movement paid off as Matt Green found Kyle Stout at the point. Stout put a slapshot on net and Rich Davis picked up a rebound and put it back into the Talawanda net to put Creek on top 1-0 at 2:55 into the 1st period. The goal fired up the Creek fans and players alike. The Braves showed why they were the number one seed as they fired up their offense and began to dominate. Talawanda proceeded to outshoot the Beavers for the rest of the period by a whopping margin. Creek goalie McClure made a games worth of saves in the first period. He was able to stop rebound after rebound while the Creek defense managed to ice the puck on other occasions. The first period ended with the Beavers clinging to the 1-0 lead. Shots on goal for the 1st period were 23-5 for the Braves. The onslaught continued early in the 2nd as the Braves continued to pepper the Creek net. The Beavers survived a major scare as McClure lost his stick during the Braves attack but the defense was finally able to clear the puck. Pavi Kullar made a good defensive play on a Brave 2 on 1. The Beavers recorded their first shot on goal just over five minutes into the 2nd period. Meanwhile the Braves had at least eight good chances. The fans were on edge as the held the lead to almost midway through the 2nd, but the relentless pressure from the Braves attackers wore the Beavers down. The pressure would pay off as a delayed penalty allowed the Braves to get an extra attacker on the ice with the puck in the Creek zone. Good puck movement allowed a Brave defenseman to wind up from the point and hit a slapshot the found its way through traffic into the Creek net. The game was tied at 1-1 at 6:20 into the 2nd period. The Beavers were able to manufacture a little bit of offense to record a second shot on goal of the period. The little burst of success was killed when the Beavers were whistled for holding at 8:16 into the 2nd period. The Braves power play went to work, but McClure covered three consecutive shots to force face-offs in the Creek zone. Cody Leiher and Jake Baldwin made clears to kill off the remaining penalty time and get the Beavers back to even strength. The nice job of the penalty kill did not chill the Braves attack. They stormed back into the Creek zone to get yet another shot on goal. McClure made the initial save, but the Braves were there for second and third chances off the rebounds. Talawanda finally squeezed the puck into the Creek net for the go ahead goal at 11:00 into the middle stanza. Just under two minutes later the scenario would repeat itself as McClure would make a save but fall victim to the goal off the rebound shot. The goal put the Braves up 3-1 with 2:23 remaining in the 2nd period. “Two and Ten” penalties were issued to Creek and Talawanda in the last minute of the 2nd. The Braves outshot Creek 27-3 in the second to take an overall lead of 50-8. The Braves continued their attack early in the third with the first shots on goal. Talawanda took a 2/10 Check from Behind penalty that looked to give Creek chance to draw within one. The Braves showed they could play a man down by controlling the puck in the Creek zone during the penalty kill. The Beavers took a boarding penalty to make it a 4 on 4 situation for 1:18. McClure came up big as a Talawanda forward made an aggressive move through the crease, but the Creek keeper made the save. McClure would be forced to come up big one more time before the Beavers returned to even strength. The Braves would extend the margin to 4-1 at 7:09 into the 3rd period. The 3rd period featured very few stoppages that created a pace that made it tough for the Beavers to keep up. A Creek hooking penalty gave the Braves their third power play of the game. Talawanda made quick work on the man-advantage to make the lead 5-1 at 10:34 into the 3rd period. About two minutes later, a familiar theme would repeat. The Braves setup a screen in front McClure, but the Creek keeper would make the save. With no clearing help in sight, The Braves were free to put the rebound away for the 6-1 lead with 2:28 remaining in the game. Shots on goal were 17-2 in the 3rd period and 67-11 overall in favor of the Braves. Coach Broderick showed class at the end of the game calling a timeout to give his seniors a chance to regroup and close out their careers on the ice together. Creek ends its season with a 19-12-2 mark. |
